God Wants You To Have Joy

Some days I just feel like I hear Jesus so clearly. It’s not like I did anything special. At least I don’t think so. But I just took some time to talk to him and wasn’t expecting anything except to spend time with him like I would with a friend. And then he gave me some great insights into who he is!

Much of the time, if you’re like me, we see God as someone who wants us not to disobey him, and we spend so much effort trying to gain his acceptance. The bible talks a lot about obeying God’s commandments, but have you ever just sat down and really thought about why. Why do we have to do what he says. Is it to keep ourselves out of hell and to make it into heaven by outweighing the things we’ve done wrong? Or just to keep God happy and keep him from being angry with us or disappointed? Do we obey him to keep bad things from happening to us and being exposed or humiliated? Man, that’s a lot of heavy thoughts right there. And now I’m so glad to tell you the reason why he asks us to obey him. This is good news.

“If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full” -John 15-:10-11

Oh my. This changed the way I see God in an instant. And I know I have to keep reminding myself this truth because the enemy wants to lie and take it away. It will change who you are and how you think.

You see, God is all powerful, has all authority, and he can change anything in a moment. He doesn’t need anything. He isn’t unsatisfied. So why would he need to control us into loving him? He doesn’t. God wants us to obey his commandments because he wants us to have the most joy that we can. Fullness of joy. It’s not my opinion, it’s the truth. H doesn’t want to control us. If he did, we would be robots and wouldn’t have a choice because he is God and we aren’t. And that is exactly why we should trust him. This shows us God’s character. He wants the best for us. And this is the place where all of his actions come from.

What you see in John 15 is that life is all about relationship. Relationship with God and with other people.

“These things I command you, so that you will love one another.” -John 15:17

If we know God’s heart, then the way we love each other can look like how God loves us. We don’t have to control people because they are doing something wrong. When we correct someone it will be coming from this place of wanting the best for them because we understand this is the whole reason God wants us to obey. We correct people in their wrong actions because we know God has something far better for them.

So let’s love people well today.
